Job Summary

The Development Associate helps the Center raise funds in the following ways: manage the process of collecting, maintaining and harvesting donor data; increases the quality and efficient use of the database; creates useful dashboard reports with the goal of growing LMC’s donor base; increases the annual fund (general operating) contributions; uses data to win more grant awards; deepens relationships with current donors and acquires new ones.

The Associate identifies and communicates insights obtained from data to achieve the above goals.  The person oversees a range of data collection and interpretation – from the daily operations of the donor database, track and appropriately acknowledge donor contributions, to forecasting trends. Aside from donor data management, the associate will also engage directly with donors, LMC management and the board, and will assist with project work, campaign management, outreach, grant deadline management, and events.

 

Engage with colleagues, donors, and board members with warmth and tact, and for handle donor and prospect data with discretion. It is essential to be able to respond to problems with a positive attitude and balance multiple deadlines and objectives.

 

Core Responsibilities

  • Maintains all donor information including correspondence, phone and visit notes, photos, and other data points; ensure accuracy, integrity, and continuous updating of files.
  • Researches, prospects, and identifies potential partners whose values align with the Center’s.
  • Identifies key potential sponsors and works with the LMC Senior Leadership team to craft tailored programs that fill the needs of both LMC and the sponsor.
  • Creates accountability/reporting system to ensure that what is promised to donors is delivered in a timely manner.
  • Ensures all Development Department income – including in-kind – is recorded.
  • Tracks and processes all donor gifts through all sources; categorizes and initiates appropriate “thank you” acknowledgments.
  • Analyzes information from financial, email, web tracking, and marketing/advertising data— including nonprofit-specific analyses such as donor lifecycle, upgrading, and downstream conversion; works with marketing to create systems to achieve the above.
  • Manages monthly renewal process for all levels of donors, customizing approaches, tracking revenue, and analyzing and renewal efforts monthly.
  • Uses available databases including Wealth Engine to identify current donors or corporations who have the capacity to give more, and identify prospective donors who can be cultivated, based on their giving history and personal interests.
  • Prepares and maintains monthly reporting for LMC Development Committee meetings and engages Committee and LMC management on ad hoc project work.
  • Generates customized queries, reports, lists for all development activities, such promotion of LMC events, thanking key levels of donors and so on.
  • Maintains confidentiality of departmental documentation and donor relation information.
  • Is detail oriented; knows how to close the loop and communicate progress to others.
  • Understands the process and nuances of donor stewardship; accepts that some weekend and evening responsibilities go with the job.
  • As needed, assists all Development events, and represents LMC at community functions, especially those related to the South Florida business community.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or requested.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, communications, or public relations preferred.
  • Two years’ experience in a similar role preferred.
  • Familiarity with non-profit fundraising a plus.
  • Available to work evening and weekend events, as may be needed from time to time.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects, set priorities, and meet deadlines.
  • Experience with Salesforce a plus.
  • Experience with Wealth Engine/iWave a plus.
  • Interest in marine life and ocean conservation a big plus.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel and Word.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Annually we reach 900,000 guests with our transformational education programs and partner with nearly 100 organizations across six continents and 16 countries in ocean conservation. In early 2022, we opened a new 27,500 square-foot campus that greatly expands our exhibition, education, and convening space and doubles our medical facilities.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. This position may involve working outdoors in Florida, often in hot and humid conditions, and at events that extend into evening and weekend hours. Must be willing and able to travel for offsite programming and possess a valid driver’s license.

 

Notes

This is a salaried and exempt full-time position. The successful incumbent may be required to perform tasks beyond the scope of this job description as requested by the supervisor. This recruitment may be used to select candidates for additional open positions. It is our policy that all team members, including newly hired, transferred, and promoted team members, will be carefully monitored, and evaluated for an initial introductory 3-month period on the job. After satisfactory completion of the introductory evaluation, such team members will be evaluated on an annual basis.
